Symphony No. 44 in e minor, Hoboken I/44, was completed in 1772 by Haydn. It is popularly known as Trauer (English: Funeral or Mourning). The tense opening movement sums up Haydn’s Sturm und Drang style with its fierce contrasts of dynamics, melody and urgent semiquaver passages. This arrangement for 4 flutes and piano is unabridged and has been transposed into a minor to suit the range of the flutes better. It is suitable for a mixed ability ensemble with the 3rd and 4th flute parts being less technical.
